From November 18th to 24th our good friend, Grant Smith of Wagstaff Interiors takes on HMDS Egypt, which is an endurance challenge through the Pharaohs Desert. Before he takes on this incredible challenge we asked him a few questions…
How long have you been running for?
I have been running for over 20 years, ever since I came back from travelling in 2003.
This is your second event like this, what made you want to try the Half Marathon Des Sables?
HMDS is 3 marathons in 4 days (120km), a physical test personally and great opportunity visit Egypt and see the pyramids.
What’s your pre-race routine?
Eat flapjacks, put on my sand gaters and backpack that weighs 8kg, then I’m ready to go!

3 London Marathon’s
9 Ultra Marathon’s
100km Morocco Des Sables
Climbed Kilimanjaro at 5895m
Climbed Toubkal at 4200m
Climbed Triglav which is a technical climb via Via Ferrata
What are your essentials for this trip?
Electrolyte tablets, food, chilli, flapjacks, gels. 2 x 750ml water, 1 bowsers water to cook, clean and eat. Socks, sleeping bag, hat, protein bars, magnesium, head torch, flip flops, first aid kit, toothbrush sawn in half, cuppa soup, sunscreen spf 50, spork, lightweight mug, thermal blanket, penknife & sentimental items from the kids. All this will be carried for the duration.
Do you partake in any other sporting activities?
I also really enjoy my Peloton & walking.
What motivates you?
To stay healthy and to see the world.
What’s your favourite post-race food?
Steak and ale pie with chips, with salt and vinegar.
What is the first thing you’ll do when you arrive back in the UK?
Go to see my kids and family.
