Make’s Contribution to the Public Sector’s Net Zero Targets
With the Government outlining its Net Zero Strategy, Make Consulting has outlined its contribution to the levelling up agenda through the following means:
- By appointing a local staff, allowing the business to reduce the carbon footprint of its employees.
- Ensuring that the environmental impact of all products specified is considered, for example we would ensure all timber comes from an FSC certified forest
- Promoting reuse of materials on a project where applicable
- Working with Clients to maximise the use of spaces with a minimal intervention approach thus reducing the environmental impact.
- Future proofing designs to ensure the asset can be adapted to the changing needs of the users.
- Amending the Company Car Policy to include the option for electric cars with the aim of having a 100% electric fleet by 2030.
Make Consulting holds an ISO 14001 accreditation as part of our Environmental Management System which provides us with the framework to not only comply with legal requirements, but also to ensure commitment to its continual improvement, the prevention of pollution and to setting and reviewing measurable environmental targets.
Sustainable Supply Chain
We encourage Client / Project Team awareness of environmental and sustainable issues through specification choice, whole life cost, building design and on contractor performance to minimise the effect of building works on the local environment. We promote / specify the use of materials which can be locally sourced and / or from renewable sources. We actively promote the reduction of energy consumption through all aspects of the capital design and ongoing operation of buildings.
Make has previously undertaken a Decarbonisation Audit Pilot Study for one of our Clients. The aim of the pilot study was to identify and deliver a significant reduction in carbon emissions within the school, acting as an exemplar for the whole asset stock. Schools are often seen as trailblazers for change in a local community, with lessons learnt in the classroom filtering out into homes. With this in mind, it was hoped that not only would this Pilot Project result in actual carbon omission reductions but would also raise awareness of climate change issues facing the world at present.
As part of the process Make undertook a detailed assessment of a 1950s primary school, identifying areas of poor energy performance and wasted energy within the building fabric and mechanical and electrical installations. Through the detailed examination into several options, significant improvements were identified and implemented, with the dependency of gas being removed from the property. In addition, air source heat pumps, solar PV, solar hot water systems, improved insulation and smart controls were also included within the viable solution For the Trust.
Waste Reduction
In the context of our business activities, environmental impacts relate to transport, power consumption, office consumables and general waste.
We have the following measures to comply with legislation, to prevent pollution and to promote energy efficiency, sustainability and recycling. These include:
- Sorting and recycling waste material.
- Proving only low CO2 emission vehicles and a reduction in the mileage allowance for individuals
Reducing the environmental impact of car journeys through promoting alternative forms of transport, encouraging walking, cycling, home working and car sharing. - Reviewing our general office and purchasing policies to encourage sourcing sustainably.
- Promoting energy efficiency and energy saving.
- Proving only low CO2 emission vehicles and a reduction in the mileage allowance for individuals
- Reducing the environmental impact of car journeys through promoting alternative forms of transport, encouraging walking, cycling, home working and car sharing.
In addition, Make Consulting also seeks to encourage contractors to consider simple changes to site waste reduction. Make encourages efficiencies to be made by limited the following when on site:
- Over-ordering
- Damage by mishandling materials
- Off cuts
- Inadequate storage of materials
- Unnecessary packaging of construction materials
Carbon Footprint Calculations and Annual Reporting
Make Consulting Ltd is actively working to reduce its carbon emissions by 2030 and is fully committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050.
Through ongoing monitoring and annual reporting, we have achieved a significant reduction in our total carbon footprint. Our reported emissions have reduced from 57.8 tonnes CO₂e in earlier reporting years to 29.2 tonnes CO₂e in our 2024 calculation, representing a substantial long-term improvement.
Our most recent 2025 assessment shows a further, albeit slight, reduction in overall emissions, reporting 29.17 tonnes CO₂e using a market-based calculation and 26.45 tonnes CO₂e using a location-based calculation. During this period, employee numbers reduced slightly, resulting in a marginal increase in carbon intensity from 1.1 to 1.17 tonnes CO₂e per employee. This metric is actively reviewed to ensure continued focus on efficiency and proportional reductions.
Analysis of our emissions profile shows that over 75% of emissions fall within Scope 3, an area where direct control is more limited. Nevertheless, Scope 3 emissions remain a key focus within our carbon reduction strategy, with consideration given to supply chain engagement, travel patterns, and operational behaviours to support further reductions over time.
We will continue to monitor, review, and report our carbon performance annually, implementing targeted actions where possible, as we work towards our long-term goal of Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050.
