Highlights include the Matlock Fire Station project and growing Make’s partnership with Bassetlaw District Council. Q- What made you choose to work at Make?
Having spoken with familiar faces within the organisation it became apparent that Make would be an excellent fit for myself. The family ethos of the company aligned with my own values. Opportunity to work on exciting projects for the likes of Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Authority were also very appealing.
Q- Talk us through your journey with Make so far?
I joined Make in May 2023 and in my circa two years of service I have been involved in some really interesting projects, including Matlock Fire Station which is a personal highlight of a successful scheme. I have also developed a strong relationship with Bassetlaw District Council which has led to an influx of opportunities for Make, not only from a Quantity Surveyor perspective but also the wider service offerings. Additionally I have spent time with the education team helping to increase the cost management offerings for projects within this sector and aiding with CIF funding applications.
Q- What is it about the position/sector that made you select this career route?
Having started my career within the Business Development Department of a regional Main Contractor, I managed to spend time with/gain an understanding of various different roles within the construction industry. Having assessed the various options available I felt my skills and interests were well suited to a Quantity Surveying pathway and I decided to take a risk and begin my career as an apprentice Quantity Surveyor in 2015.
Q- What is the best thing about working at Make?
The best thing about working at Make, as eluded to above is the family ethos and general team spirit throughout the company.
Q- What do you like the most about your role?
My favourite part of my role is the variety, whether that be the type of projects I’m involved in (e.g. anything from a new build fire station to a kitchen & bathroom replacement programme) or the blend of desk based duties, in-person meetings and site visits.
Q- What do you find most challenging about your role?
Coincidentally this also aligns with my favourite part of the role in terms of managing a workload containing multiple projects for multiple clients, the challenge is ensuring I have a clear understanding of the status of every scheme I am involved in and ensuring the required level of service is provided for all of my clients.
Q- What have been your biggest achievements during your time so far with Make?
My biggest achievements so far at Make would include the conclusion of the Matlock Fire Station project with an agreed Final Account that was lower than the contract sum. The part I have played in the development of Make’s flourishing relationship with Bassetlaw District Council is also something I am proud of.
From a slightly different perspective I was proud to be asked to be the captain of our company football team and to select a chosen charity to support during a Business Fives tournament last summer. The fact we managed to raise around £950.00 for a charity that means a lot to my Wife and I.
Q- Where do you see your future career taking you over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I would like to continue to progress within Make and continue to develop relationships with existing clients, as well as gaining new clients to hopefully enable us to work on some more exiting projects! I like to think of myself as being fairly ambitious and as such one of my own personal goals is to hopefully progress to a more senior role within the business (e.g. Managing Surveyor or Associate Director).
