Make Consulting were instructed by East Midlands Railway to undertake three Feasibility options for Boston Railway Station.

The Project

The three Feasibility options were for the following;

  • Community space and start up offices within a vacant area of the railway station.
  • Layout options for the toilets, providing options for both segregated and unisex WCs.
  • Waiting room and café layout options including reducing the ticket office area to allow for installation of an accessible WC, accessed from the waiting room.

Following the initial site scoping visit, and with close liaison with the EMR Project Manager, three options were provided to meet the Client brief, which were then refined to the preferred option by way of Stakeholder engagement with the head of stations and the station manager.

As well as providing the layout options, ideas were incorporated within the scheme to build excitement into the design, for example cycle charging points within the booking hall to work with EMRs sustainable vision, and an idea to run a local artwork competition with the winning design being painted onto the walls.

The Feasibility Study was a success, with the project gaining external funding, and is now progressing to full technical design.
