Q. What made you choose to work at Make?
Initially I was attracted to working at Make because of the varied sectors they cover from Education to Blue Light and Commercial. The working environment at Make is so friendly and approachable. The Managing Surveyors are extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Everyone is open to helping each other, without any judgement of previous experience. The work is varied and there are opportunities to gain experience in both project work and survey work. The company does also cover a variety of sectors.
Q. Talk us through your journey with Make so far?
I originally joined Make as work experience. I joined onto the Building Surveying Masters as a non-cognate student, coming from a background in Fashion therefore, I was eager to gain some ‘real-life’ experience in the construction industry. Following an initially unsuccessful interview, Make agreed to take me on one-day-a-week as work experience to allow me to build on my experience. A few weeks later they offered me an Assistant Building Surveyor role, which I was elated with. Make have continued to support me with my development and I have gained an abundance of experience from undertaking Dilapidations Surveys, Disrepair Surveys for Social Housing and Feasibility Studies. I have since graduated from my Masters Degree with a Distinction and started my RICS APC, I’m excited to continue my journey, build on my experience and progress further in my Building Surveying career with Make.
Q. What is it about the position/sector that made you select this career route?
From working in Fashion Buying, I realised that I wasn’t enjoying that career path. My dad was a surveyor and I knew other people that had gone through the non-cognate degree route into Surveying and were enjoying it. I’ve always been interested in the construction sector, how buildings are designed and constructed and the contract management side also appealed to me. From researching the Building Surveying Masters course at Nottingham Trent University, I decided that Building Surveying was what I wanted to pursue and I’m still so happy with that decision. I love having the balance of being out on site and in the office. I’ve been all over the country and accessed buildings that I would have never come across if it wasn’t for this job. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone in so many ways but, it’s also made me grow in confidence and knowledge.
