Make Consulting (Make) provided Voyage Care with a broad range of services that were necessary in order to deliver the project which included site surveys, design and consultation, cost management and contract administration, all of which played a key part in enabling us to take the initial design concept through the construction phases to achieve client handover.
Successful handover of the project would depend upon achieving key factors linked directly to the client’s service provision. Brain injury support services require careful consideration during the design stage. It was vital that these criteria were achieved. Make ensured this occurred through detailed Client liaison and collaboration.
The Challenge
The project presented a number of challenges centred around service user requirements including access, design and layout. It was imperative to recognise the specific needs of the brain injury care sector and the challenges this presented to the design of the project. For example, access issues around the external exit from the building and the need to protect service users from exiting the building via push bars as these can create a health and safety concern.
The bedroom layout was also a key factor of the project. Access to the bed needed to be gained from both sides, this had implications on the electrical design and the internal layout of walls and other services. The design of the training kitchen was another key consideration as it was important to ensure the service users could use all of the facilities in the training kitchen should there be any individual requirements.
The Solution
Make were able to overcome design, access and layout challenges and deliver the project to meet the clients expectations through a coordinated approach to project design and delivery. Regular meetings were held with the Operations Team to discuss specific design requirements, and client feedback from nursing and clinical staff was invaluable to ensure the building design met the unique user-specific requirements.
The Outcome
Make were able to deliver the project incorporating all of the specific design requirements. The Operations Team were extremely happy with the outcome of the project, both aesthetically and practically and commented that they were really pleased to see that the project met all their requirements of creating a safe and comfortable space for their residents.
