The Brief
The Multi Academy Trust has been installing green energy measures on an ad hoc basis, such as the installation of Solar PV but had no clear strategy other than reducing energy costs and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The Challenge
Make Consulting (Make) embarked on the creation of Estate Wide Heat Decarbonisation Plans with a focus on the fabric first approach to reduce the overall heating demand on the properties.
Some headline figures have been included below:
- Total carbon emissions from the existing school buildings’ heating and lighting are estimated at around 275 Tonnes carbon dioxide per year.
- Through the implementation of decarbonisation measures, total carbon emissions from the improved existing school buildings’ heating and lighting are estimated at around 73 Tonnes carbon dioxide per year, or a 74% reduction.
Decarbonisation measures include:
- The retrofit of modern high performance building fabric for walls and windows to reduce heat demand, this is a fabric first approach.
- Reducing the heat demand enables the switching from gas boilers to electric air source heat pumps for heating the buildings.
- Retrofit of lighting to modern LED’s.
- Increasing PV installations to increase the generation of on-site electricity.
However, decarbonisation ‘quick wins’ have been identified at the two most recently built schools. Through increasing solar PV’s and switching from gas boilers to air source heat pumps, there would be no requirement for any building fabric improvement. This would give an estimated carbon emission reduction from 68 Tonnes to 24 Tonnes, or a 65% for the two schools.
The Outcome
Make are supporting the Multi Academy Trust in the implementation of the decarbonisation strategies whilst also assisting with bid applications for capital funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
Make will manage the entire process, from specification, procurement, bid writing and project delivery, offering the Multi Academy Trust an all-encompassing, value for money consultancy package.
