Hillstone Primary School is a single academy trust based in the West Midlands whose school was in need of major roof repairs. Make Consulting (Make) supported the school initially in obtaining funding and, once funding was secured, seeing through the works required to drastically improve the condition of the school’s roof. Taking advantage of the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), Make were able to support the primary school with two phases of flat roof recovering projects, securing a staggering £1.0 million in funding.

The Problem

Make were approached by Hillstone Primary School due to the poor condition of their roof covering, with several substantial leaks causing disruption to classrooms and having been unsuccessful in the previous CIF bidding round. On initial survey, it was clear that there was significant water ingress leading to operational disruption after any period of rain

The Solution

Make undertook a site wide CIF appraisal, which concluded that circa 50% of the roof areas were categorised as D1 condition whilst the remaining 50% were categorised as C2. Based on this condition data, Make commenced the bidding process which successfully received around £500,000 of funding for the first phase of roofs; to remediate all D1 rated areas.

With the first phase of roofing on site, Make undertook regular inspections of the remaining C2 roof areas and concluded that they had deteriorated significantly since the original survey. Make then began the preparation of a CIF bid for the second phase of, now D1, roofing works.

As a result of the evidence collated and a productive partnership with the school, a further £500,000 was secured in concurrent CIF funding to remediate the remaining roof areas.

The Outcome

Make undertook the role of Lead Consultant and worked collaboratively with the Client and Contractor to ensure teaching provision could remain fully operational throughout the course of the project. Through diligent project management and contract administration the project completed on time, within budget, and with no adverse disruption to the school.
