The Challenge
EMR required a design partner able to transform the station buildings from those just used for transport, to spaces where people also work, learn, socialise and hold meetings. With Skegness and Boston historically having a low skilled workforce, an emphasis on promoting skills is at the forefront of the brief with the aim of uplifting the community. In addition, a focus upon sustainable and low carbon materials is important to meet the wider EMR goals, with the project to be designed.
The Solution
Make have brought together a team of designers in order to enhance the offerings that the stations provide and re-energise the under-utilised space. Through listening and interpreting the Client’s requirements, we have brought innovative solutions and ideas to the table. Examples include providing interactive learning opportunities and incorporating the current community bookshop within the newly refurbished waiting room at Boston. Other ideas put forward include running art competitions with the winners artwork being created into a mural, and providing a space for an interactive model of the town to educate passengers on the facilities within the towns. Make provided a full tender pack in order to procure a design and build contractor, along with budget estimates to ensure the projects were affordable from the outset.
The Current Status
The projects are currently in the construction phases, with the new, modernised waiting room at Boston now open. Construction due to complete later this year.
